* 11. july 1811; † 1. august 1896) was a british lawyer and natural scientist . Grove along with Christian Friedrich Schönbein is said to be the father of the fuel cell. Motivated by Schönbein´s work, he started his first experiments on fuel cells at the Royal Institution of South Wales in 1839. He invented the Grove element within this very year. The Grove element is a variation of the galavnic cell, consisting of a zinc cylincer in depleted sulfuric acid and platin in concentrated nitric acid, divided by a clayfront. Batteries of that kind were widely spread in the area of telegraphics during the following 20 years. |
